Now, there won’t be even a single person who hasn’t heard of Senator Ladda Tammy Duckworth after her remarks to Donald Trump. The famous American politician and retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel have been serving as the Junior States Senator for Illinois since 2017.

The story of Senator Duckworth is far more than inspiring. She is the first Asian-American congresswoman from Illinois and also, the first member of Congress from Thai nationality. Her childhood was spent in many countries across Southeast Asia since her father worked for the UN. Once Senator Duckworth completed her graduation, she enrolled in military training and went on to become a successful combat pilot.

The year 2004 was no less than a nightmare for her. While she was deployed to serve in the Iraq War, she lost both her legs when a rocket-propelled grenade struck the lower half of her body. Of course, the incident was something which left her drained, both physically and mentally but while recovering from the unfortunate event, she transformed into an activist.

Senator Duckworth became an advocate of better medical healthcare facilities for the veteran soldiers wounded in the war and their families. Initially, she worked as a staff supervisor at Rotary International Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois. Her service towards the veteran war soldiers motivated her to further her career in politics.

Within no time, she was appointed as the Director of the Illinois Department of Veteran Affairs and handled the post till 2009. Senator Duckworth has been launching various campaigns and working for the betterment of veteran war soldiers.

Senator Duckworth is the first disabled female veteran to have been elected to the Senate.  In October 2014, she retired from the army as a lieutenant colonel. Senator Duckworth is the receiver of Purple Heart and also honored with Air Medal and Army Commendation Medal.

How Do You Deal With A Bully, When That Bully Is Your Boss

Everyone eventually pulled under the inevitable slavery of commercialism. We make a living because we must. We become responsible adults who cater to their own needs as well as the needs of others. It requires decades of hard work to keep our financial status and overall well-being at a consistent state. Even with the involuntary elemental burdens of working, we are entitled to be safeguarded by the company or the person for which we are working.

 

So, what do you do when the ones you look to for help, support and protection fail to give worth to your wellbeing? What if it is your boss who is the instigator of such harassment?

 

The reason workplace bullying is complicated is due to the hierarchy that exists. When a person in a position of power and superiority instigates the bullying, it may seem that he is immune to any complaints against his actions. How are you meant to combat such behavior coming from someone who is more distinguished than you?

 

One should have the expectation that they will be secure in a workplace. When bullying happens, that is when one should take action. Here are some things you can do:

 

  • Learn to dissect the situation – You do need to consider if your boss is just acting out because of a specific situation or he is naturally ill-mannered. He is often undergoing a lot of stress, and it is only natural that he become ill-tempered sometimes. This is no different than any other working professional. However, if it is the latter, then you need to speak up.

 

  • Gather evidence – Just as with any other situation; you need to gather sufficient evidence to support your allegation. Remember, you are going up against someone who holds more power than you. Chances are, they have the financial and personal support that can help them find a way out of the accusations. If possible, find someone you can trust at your workplace and ask if anyone else has experienced the same mistreatment.

 

  • Speak up when necessary – It is best to stand your ground when you know your boss has crossed the line. However, remain calm and try to prevent things from escalating into a full-scale verbal or physical confrontation. You are both respectable human beings that need to work out your dispute in the best way possible. Talk it out and let your boss know that you feel degraded or attacked by his words or actions. Politely ask for the respect that you deserve. It is also a good idea to have the HR department help you and your boss settle your differences.

 

  • Learn to be the bigger man – If your boss is extremely rude and you run out of options to save your dignity, learn to walk away. You deserve a good work environment and a good boss who prioritizes your mental and emotional needs. You may work for them, but remember that you play an essential role and that your efforts are directed toward the success of the establishment.

 

  • Prioritize yourself – Sometimes, workplace bullying is so subtle that you have no clue it is even happening. Workplace bullying is not only verbal and physical abuse but unfair work agreements as well. Some employers make you work for unreasonable hours with minimum salary, no pay for overtime work, no bonuses, etc. When you think it is going to take a toll on your overall health, say no. You won’t be able to function as they expect in those conditions anyway and sooner or later, you’ll take the blame. You deserve better, and they should know it as well.

Just like any personal relationship, you are entitled to a reasonable alliance that benefits you. Try to work things out first, but if that is unsuccessful, it may be time for a fresh start. You still have a lot of options and a lot of opportunities. At the end of the day, there is no one above or below you, when morals are involved.

Follow your dreams! This is what each one of us is taught right from the day we gain our sense. Are we not? But do we ‘all’ really have the audacity and courage to follow our dreams? While others might just want to go with the flow, some of us have taken a step to defy all odds and stand up for a cause.

These extraordinary people have a fire in them which cannot calm before the accomplishment of the set goal. We all have heard the success stories of all those celebrities who went from rags to riches, but what about the everyday folks who accomplish a lot in their life and yet go unnoticed?

Benard Didacus Opiyo is undoubtedly a living legend. A native of Uradi village in Kenya-Siaya, Africa; he has done something which must be appreciated by all hearts. Benard has been the one to advocate for building a high school targeting female achievers in the socially conservative region of Kenya. Now what is more interesting is that the high school molds these female achievers in an overall fashion with a particular focus on life skills.

Benard says that the idea first occurred to him while he was just having a regular chat with his friend. The object of their conversation was the educational trends in their remote village of Kenya. Because of the high poverty index, the figures were not at all amazing. There was only a little proportion of those who attended school, and most of them dropped out just because of poverty. Of those who graduate, a fraction made it to the university.

The social status of girls is even more displeasing. Early pregnancies and cultural backdrops render them ineligible to better educational facilities. Such a situation indeed demanded something to be done. Now, defying people requires a lot of courage. Setting up a girl’s school definitely wouldn’t have been as easy for Benard. With persistent hard-work and perseverance, he  founded ‘Uradi Girls High School’ with the underlying motto of ‘Moulding Achievers.’ Established in 2010, they now have approximately 100 girls. These figures are surprising because of the above-said reasons. Moreover, the entire school can house up to 360 girls, and the work still goes on!

They aim to provide quality education despite all the challenges and aid the girls in getting into universities for their betterment as well as that of their community.
